Behavioral ecology research is lacking on this species which would be informative in understanding future effects on populations and how managers should effectively monitor the species. However, it is unknown how they could be affected by similar stressors within Wyoming. The Townsend’s big-eared bat ( Corynorhinus townsendii) is a species that resides in Wyoming and is known to be sensitive to anthropogenic stressors in other regions where they are found.
Some Wyoming species are already being affected by these factors and there is still a lot of unknowns as to how other species in the state will be affected in the years to come. Unfortunately, bat populations have seen declines in recent years due to diseases, such as white-nose syndrome (WNS), and anthropogenic stressors including habitat loss, wind energy development and climate change. Bats act as natural pest control, and pollinators of culturally important plants like agave and saguaro cacti.
With over 1,400 species worldwide, around 44 species of bats make their home in North America.
